Now that we are one month down the New Year of 2018, I asked few friends and aquatints about their New Year’s Resolution or Goals. Some had none, most people had a New Year’s Resolution like developing a hobby, losing weight, travel etc. Very few people had set goals, and of them, a miniscule number had written their goals. For those who don’t believe in Goal Setting, I’d like ask them a question. How many times, have you got on a train or bus without a destination in mind? I’m sure Never. Then how can you afford to live your journey of life without a destination i.e. a GOAL. Everyone has dreams, Goals are nothing but dreams put in a more structured manner.
10 essentials of Goal Setting:
- Set SMART Goals:
Specific – Goals should not be vague. Be very specific as to what exactly you want
Measurable – A number or a percentage increase or decrease should be included
Attainable – It should achievable, not too difficult that you give up immediately
Relevant – Your goal should be aligned with what you want to achieve in your
Time – Goals have to be time bound i.e. with a deadline.
Example of vague goal: ‘I want to lose weight’
Example of SMART goal: ‘I want to lose 10 kgs by 31st December 2018’.
Immediate goals – next 30 days
Short term goals – 3 months, 6 months, 9 months
Long term goals – 1 year, 5 years, 10 years.
- Write your Goals:
If the Goal is not written, there will be neither focus nor commitment. An unwritten goal is just another wish.
- Own your Goal:
It should be your own goal, not someone else’s. You may take suggestions and advice from well-wishers, however, the ultimate goal should be your Own.
- Start Small:
If you are new to Goal Setting, preferably start small. Setting very high goals could get overwhelming and you might give up too soon.
- Action Plan:
You need to make an action plan, which acts like a MAP to achieve your goals or reach your destination. You will derive short term and immediate goals when you make your action plan, which will help you in achieving your long term goals.
- Break your Goals:
Break your goals into smaller workable units with deadlines. Your Long Term goals can be broken down into multiple Short Term Goals, which in turn can be broken down into Immediate Goals. You need to use your judgement and understanding while breaking down your goals. This also helps in keeping a track of your goals.
- Balanced Goals:
Set your goals in various areas of your life. Balanced goals will enable a balanced life. The different areas include, Career, Health, Finance, Relationships, Self-Development, Pleasure Goals, Community/Charitable Goals. All these goals are interconnected. For example, if you have a good career, you will be financially stable, which will enable you enjoy good vacations at your favourite destinations, with your family/friends. There may be times when you would only want to focus on your career and financial goals, however, one should never compromise on Health and Relationship Goals. After all, no one would like to become wealthy at the cost of their health and soured relationships. You need good health and relationships to enjoy the wealth you have created.
- Review your Goals:
Review your goals regularly and be flexible. Modify your goals and action plans as and when required.
- Reward yourself:
Always reward yourself even on achieving small goals. This motivates you to achieve the bigger goals.
All the Best! GET SET GOAL!
